saw stops......

The ride home tonight was a journey into hell and back. I'm glad that this doesn't happen that often but when it does, a good book could help pass the time. Traffic was jammed up from my on ramp to route 10 all the way to Park Avenue. Everything was moving at snail's pace. Most of the problem was the cars on the right wanted to go to the left and the cars on the left wanted to be on the right. Nobody would give an inch or even think of being courteous and allowing someone over. It was screw you, I can't go anywhere and you're keeping me company.

This traffic jam ate up a sizable chunk of my decompression time in the shop. After scanning medical records all day on sick veterans, I need this time to unwind. This is when I don't have to find out another veteran has passed on or another one is sicker than the last time. This is the time I feed my inner child who likes to make things. And he doesn't care want it is as long as it doesn't involve computers or scanners.

my stop for the saw donkey
The thin strip will get glued to the wider piece on the bottom. The smaller strip will ride in a slot on the saw donkey. That will keep the wider piece vertical and stop side to side movement. The stop will also extend up above the top by the amount between the thin strip and the top of the wide piece. It doesn't need to be much more than 3/4" and this is about 1". This will probably make more sense once it's completed.

making the slot on the 2nd saw donkey
Chiseling this end grain Douglas Fir is not as easy as I thought it would be even with a sharp chisel. If you take too big of a bite it starts to crumble rather then come off as shavings. After I removed most of the waste I switched to my hand router to get it to depth.

3 step operation
I found installing these threaded inserts to be relatively easy for me. For me, I find the key to installing the insert  is to start very slowly at first being very anal about maintaining vertical. Once it's in a bit I can then crank it on down just slightly below the surface.

These inserts required two drilling operations. The first one about an inch deep for the insert and the second one a couple inches deeper for the bolt. Both holes are different sizes - the insert was about 7/16" and the bolt was 9/32.

 1/4-20 insert
I like the longer length of these inserts because it provides a longer length for the bolt to screw in.  A good reason to try and install it as plumb as possible. I have had good luck with these inserts in long grain and end grain. This is my first time trying it in Douglas Fir and I am interested in how this will hold up.

1/4-20 wing nut bolt
I have 3 of these left over from some other project that I don't remember. Since I don't order odd numbers of parts, I must have used one. I'll put two more to use here.

it fits
It's straight up and down and the it threads all the way down. This part is ready to go.

strip #2
My first strip left over from yesterday was way too thin. I cut off another piece and planed it until it too was too loose of a fit. It's a good the long strip I'm getting these small ones from is 3 feet long.

I was in a hurry and I didn't check my walls to see if they were square to the ends. When I did check, they weren't. Even though I sawed the walls they are bowed. I squared the walls with a Stanley 79 and a chisel.

it's a little better
The walls are square but they aren't plumb along the length. The strip fits in the slot snugly nonetheless so I'm leaving this one as it is. This is the slot for saw donkey #2. I put #1 back in the vise and checked the walls for square on that. I'll be reworking them tomorrow.  It's 1700 and quitting time.

I was very happy with the vise action tonight. Two turns to the left engaged the QR and one hand pulled the vise out and pushed it back in. It's nice to have it working like it is supposed to. One thing I've learned over the years is to wait a few weeks and see what it is like then. I think it'll be working as well as it is now.
