Painting done but......

I'm rapidly loosing interest in the DVD shelf now that it is almost done. Instead I've been thinking about the 2nd bookstand I'm going to make. I found a spot for it in the dinning room by the buffet.  I should be able to fill up the two bookshelves with the books I have laying all around the house.

I made a few changes to it and the first was I'll be using flat shelves rather then angled ones. It will also be about 10 inches wider R/L. Other than this, it will look pretty much like the first one. And this one will not be painted too.

ready for painting
I don't like the thought of books laying on paint so my shelves are going to be finished with shellac and varnish. I was going to tape off the through tenons but I gave up on that idea. Doing the shelves will be enough for this.

not good coverage
I was disappointed in the coverage with this paint. I have two coats on this and I'll have to put a 3rd on. I can see streaks and breaks in the color throughout both ends. With two coats of shellac on this first I expected to get away with one or maybe two coats of paint.

bottom will done at the same time
The bottom has two coats of paint on it and it looks much better than the sides do. Before I hit the rack tonight, I'll put the final coat on the bottom. Tomorrow I'll put the final finish on the shelves.

3 boards for the new bookstand
The left most board will be the top and the top backer detail. The middle board will be the shelves because this board is all flat grain and it won't be seen. The right most board will the the sides. It has some color and swirly grain from end to end. It is the most interesting looking board to my eye.

color and grain swirls

This is a flat sawn board but this side doesn't exhibit it like the opposite side does. That side has large cathedrals on it.

two sides sawn to rough length
breaking down the shelves
Everything is getting sawn a couple of inches over on the length. I'll get the 2 shelves and the sides for the drawer out of this.

1/2 way there  need the top
stock for the top
This bow is a strong 1/8 inch here in the middle. I can plane this out but that will make this too thin to use for the top. Time to switch lanes and make something else out of this.

everything but the top
I took the bowed board and sawed it up. I got the front and back of the drawer and the long and two short pieces for the top detail. This was quite a workout and in spite of the cool shop, I worked up a good sweat ripping these pieces.

what is left over
I still need two drawer runners and two backers for the shelves. I know I can get the drawer runners but two shelf backers are iffy. Getting one of them depends are the width of the small piece. I just noticed this lack while I was typing this and looking at the pic. I still have to get a new top and I can get a second shelf backer then too. When I paint the final coat on the DVD shelf I'll check this. If I remember to do both before I hit the rack.
