more saw donkey work......

Another slow one in the shop today. Usually my thumbs hurt a little come quitting time but today they were humming tunes. My right thumb especially didn't like being bumped at all. Some days I have to count a bazillion pages of medical notes and some days I count hardly any at all. The last two days I have done more than I have in a very long time. All that repetitive motion with the thumbs caused the flare up. Which in turn limited my time in the shop.

It sucks that I am close to retiring where I can then spend my whole day playing in the shop and that may not happen. The only good thing about my arthritis is that it isn't the kind that requires medicine to halt its destruction of my joints. So far, as long as I take one Alleve a day, I have been able to do pretty much what I want. Today, I didn't have the strength in my hands for them to do my bidding. I did what I could and called it a day.

oops
It looks like I was a wee bit too snug with my plugs. I not only got a split on this end but the opposite one too.

one more split
Three of the four legs developed cracks. One on both ends and this one here with this. This is a very strange crack/split. I'm going to try and glue them shut. I glued on last night before I went to bed.

forced glue into the crack
I kept forcing glue into the crack until it would not take anymore. I then glued it shut as best I could with a couple of clamps.

double ended glued and cooking
If this doesn't work, I'll saw a slot out removing the crack and gluing in a piece of wood. The one I glued last night looks good but I'll have to keep an eye on it for while. When I make the tenons, I will make sure that I don't make them as snug as I did with the plugs.

squared up the mortises for the uprights
I wanted to get the tenons sawn and fitted tonight but that will have to wait for another day.

bit of a hiccup
When I did my layout for the through mortises I didn't transfer my lines around with my knife. Instead I measured from the ends and used a scrap 4x4 to mark the ends. I thought that was ok for a shop project but it wasn't very accurate. The ends are off and aren't straight up and down but stepped. I think it was this unevenness on the ends that caused my splits. I'll have to square these off before I do the tenons but it'll have to be done tomorrow. Lesson learned - next time no matter what type of project, I'll use a knife to transfer my lines around to the opposite side.

added to the list
The enclosure for this is now too small for my replacement parts. The  replacement capacitor is over an 1" longer than the original one. The switch is toast too and the replacement for it won't fit in the cutout for it. I added making a new enclosure for the replacement parts to my shop A+ list. For now, I plug it in to turn it on and pull the plug to shut it off . FYI - Steel City went bankrupt and parts are almost non-existent now.

two new 6" adjustable clamps
I got these two from Lie Nielsen for a cost of $18 each. They are nicely made and I think they are well worth it. They are the typical LN quality made tool.

25 year old+ clamp on the left
I have two of these clamps. I got them just before I left the Navy from the USS Hunley. We had made a last sea trip to dump all the stuff from the boat and I saved these two.  Take away the patina and it looks exactly like the brand new one. The only difference I see in them is that the wooden handles on the LN clamps are a bit beefier.

side by side
I thought that the new clamps were bigger but side by side they are the same. I've had the older clamps for over 20 years and I have only started to use them in the last 2-3 years. It's because of my using mostly hand tools when possible that these clamps have suddenly become very handy.

part of my Lee Valley gift certificate
I had to buy a new iron for my rebate plane. I had dropped the A2 iron and it landed on the outside point blunting it. I tried to sharpen it free hand but that didn't work. I ended up making it worse than it was. This is an O-1 iron and ready to go.

Incra protractor
This is the one thing I wanted to get with my LV gift certificate.

why I bought it
This protractor has a built in straight edge and slits to layout angles from 0 to 180.

the old way
The two biggest beefs I had with this protractor were getting the 0-180 line even with the edge and then accurately marking the angle I wanted. When you are making a multi sided object having the angle off even less than 1° adds up. The Incra protractor solves both of these headaches.

I'll still use both of these
The Incra won't work in all instances I might need it. I have this 360 protractor and and I have two half circle protractors too. I'm sure that these will still get used for when I can't use the Incra.

I'll have to make a box for the Incra protractor. The protractor is made of a thin metal. It is barely stiffer than Reynolds wrap. Without protection afforded by a box, this would look like a used handkerchief in no time at all.
